Team Pelfrey IL Struggles to Find Pace at Barber Motorsports, Looks Forward to Indy GP

LEEDS, Ala. – Rounds three and four of the Indy Lights Presented By Cooper Tires proved to be a tough weekend for Team Pelfrey IL where Juan Piedrahita and Pato O’Ward struggled to find pace around the 2.83-mile road course at Barber Motorsports Park. Piedrahita, who was fastest in testing at Barber Motorsports Park last week, qualified tenth for round three as teammate O’Ward qualified sixth. As the field of fifteen charged toward turn one, Santi Urrutia and O’Ward made contact damaging the nose cone, resulting in a pit stop for the No. 3 Gap Guard/Team Pelfrey IL machine on the opening lap. O’Ward and Piedrahita finished in eighth and eleventh positions respectively. Round four qualifying was cancelled due to inclement weather, therefore the Series required the grid to line up for the race two based on championship points.

As the green flag waved Sunday afternoon, O’Ward found himself starting in fifth after his solid performance in rounds one and two of the championship. Additionally, Piedrahita, the Columbian native, started in fourteenth position. The bad luck continued as the 45-minute race began Sunday afternoon when O’Ward was involved in an incident with Zachary Claman DeMelo. The incident brought both DeMelo and O’Ward’s race to an end, allowing Piedrahita to gain three positions and finish in eleventh. Team Pelfrey IL will return to action on May 12-13 at the Grand Prix of Indianapolis. Contact in both races, but luckily, I could continue racing in race one, but I ended in eighth place and race two was just bad luck in all ways. Super bummed for the Pelfrey guys because they don’t deserve the results that were showed this weekend. Hopefully luck is on our side next time.” Juan Piedrahita: No. 2 “It was a difficult weekend for the whole IL team. We struggled with pace and had no luck during both races. We will keep working hard and Indy is right around the corner and we already know what we can do there.”
