Piedrahita Scores his Fifth Top-10 Finish of the Season at Road America

Elkhart Lake, Wis. – Juan Piedrahita continues to show consistency finishing inside the top-10 during the doubleheader weekend at Road America; the longest circuit on the 2017 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires schedule.

Piedrahita and Team Pelfrey utilized Friday’s 20-minute practice session to work through various setups which ultimately enabled the Pelfrey car to be the sixth fastest on track. Faster times were expected due to cooler track temperatures during Saturday morning’s qualifying efforts, Piedrahita’s performance proved to be solid after running competitive lap-times with the leaders, laying down his fastest time in the first qualifying session with a 1 minute and 54.06 second lap and a 1 minute 52.86 second lap in the second qualifying session. These results solidified the No. 2 Polipetrosur Team Pelfrey Mazda in eighth and eleventh for both races.

In Race One, Piedrahita started alongside Belardi Auto Racing’s Shelby Blackstock on the outside of row four in eight-place. When the green flag waved, the field of 14 Indy Lights cars battled for position around the 4.014-mile, 14-turn road course where the Colombian collected two positions on the first lap. The fast pace continued throughout the 20 Lap feature where the 25-year-old set the second fastest lap of the race while successfully challenging Nico Jamin for fifth position with only 5 Laps remaining. Piedrahita and Team Pelfrey started the weekend off with strong momentum going into Race Two after collecting the top-five finish.

At the start of Race Two, Piedrahita showed quick pace despite starting on the inside of row seven in eleventh-place, next to Dalton Kellett of Andretti Autosport. It was an action-packed race as Piedrahita reported to the crew that Nicolas Dapero of Juncos Racing made minor contact with the signature yellow machine on Lap 2, however Piedrahita was able to maintain control and stay on track. As the number of green laps faded, Piedrahita made his way to tenth position, almost catching Kellett on the “Morraine Sweep” going into Turn 5, resulting in his second top-10 finish for the weekend.
